Anti-Tarnish Jewellery: What It Means and How to Keep It Shining Longer
Share
If you've shopped for jewellery online recently, you've probably seen the term "anti-tarnish" everywhere — including across our own collections at House of Sonam. But what does it actually mean, and does it really make a difference? Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Anti-Tarnish Jewellery?
Regular gold or silver-plated jewellery reacts with air, moisture, and skin oils over time, causing the plating to dull, discolour, or wear off — especially in humid climates. Anti-tarnish jewellery is treated with a protective coating that slows down this reaction, so the shine lasts significantly longer with everyday wear.
It doesn't mean the jewellery will never fade — but it means you get many more months (often years) of wear before you notice any change, compared to untreated plated jewellery.
How Is It Different From Regular Plated Jewellery?
| Regular Plated | Anti-Tarnish | |
|---|---|---|
| Shine duration | Fades within weeks/months | Lasts significantly longer |
| Reaction to moisture/sweat | Discolours quickly | More resistant |
| Everyday wearability | Needs careful handling | Better suited for daily wear |
| Price | Usually lower | Slightly higher, but longer-lasting |
5 Simple Tips to Make Your Jewellery Last Even Longer
- Keep it dry — remove jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising. Moisture is the biggest enemy of any plating, anti-tarnish or not.
- Apply last, remove first — put on your jewellery after perfume, deodorant, and makeup, and take it off before washing your face or hands.
- Store it separately — keep pieces in a soft pouch or lined box, away from direct sunlight and humidity, and away from other jewellery to prevent scratches.
- Wipe after wear — a soft, dry cloth wipe after each use removes sweat and oils before they settle into the plating.
- Avoid harsh chemicals — cleaning agents, chlorine, and even some hand sanitizers can accelerate tarnishing.
